How did the data breach happen?
In December 2021, many users started noticing some unauthorized access requests in the app for retrieving security key and many other important details, and mostly these requests were from recycled phone numbers.
Customers sensed foul play and immediately confronted the administration of Cash App. After investigating the matter, Cash App found out that a former employee had gained access to all the sensitive data and leaked that to external sources after leaving the company. It is being speculated that it was done out of revenge.

Because of the data breach, there were many unauthorized transactions, and many users also lost most of their balance in the account, and others lost complete control of their accounts. Despite all the things that were faced by the customers, the company became unresponsive upon asking questions.
The company was heavily criticized for how they have handled the situation. It is the responsibility of a company if any kind of breach has happened to inform the customers and lock all their accounts until the security breach has been resolved.

According to the lawsuit, the company is being sued for two most important factors that they failed to inform their customers timely and if they had, there might have been fewer consequences. Secondly, after the numerous complaints, they delayed in resolving the issue and were unresponsive to the queries asked.
